What Sizes I Cut My Scraps Into…
I have gotten a lot of questions about what sizes I process or cut my scraps into, so I made this handy little diagram for you all!
Essentially, I will cut the largest strip possible (starting with 6.5” wide strips). I then work my way down in strips width until I am left with a string (a string is anything less than 2.5” but more than .75”). Now this being said, I do set aside strips of fabric that are 9” wide or larger. I will also set aside fat eights (9” x 18” cuts).
The reason I start with the widest strip possible is simply because I can always cut the width of the strip down later into narrower strips if I need more of a certain color or size (for example, I can cut a 5” strip into (2) 2.5” strips). It gives me more options in the future. Just like I can always cut my longer strips into squares if needed for a certain project (Let’s say I want to make a charm square quilt but am lacking 5” squares….I can always cut some of my longer strips into 5” squares so I have what I need).
You may ask “Why not just sub cut all your strips into squares or rectangles?” Well, the simple answer is I like the flexibility of having strips. I can use the strips for scrappy bindings or scrappy borders. I can even sew a bunch of strips together and make a scrappy backing if I want.
Here is a scrappy binding I made recently using all my cool temperature solid non width of fabric (WOF) 2.5” strips…isn’t she pretty?!
If you are tired of being over run with piles of scraps and feeling overwhelmed then I suggest giving this a try. I rarely used my scraps before I started sub cutting them into these sizes. Now I love pulling piles out and making scrappy creations. It’s fun and also easy on the purse strings! Start with 10 minute bursts or by pairing it with a favorite podcast or tv episode. The time will fly by!
Do you pre cut your scraps? If so, what sizes do you like to cut your scraps into? Let me know in the comments!
