Limington Pattern

Well, here it is! Limington, my latest quilt pattern. Sometimes classics just need a bit of a shake up, and that’s exactly what I did with the classic trip around the world quilt block. With the help of a guided color palette, Limington is a modern gem.

So, as many of you know, I name my patterns for places in Maine. This one is called Limington because Limington is where I rode bikes with friends, developed my sense of values and morals, and began my journey in this world. So it seemed fitting this pattern would be named after the place I grew up in.

The pattern is also written for 4 sizes, wall hanging (I turned mine into a pillow!), lap, throw, and queen size. Not only that, but I have written the pattern to makes use of your stash/yardage as well as scrap strips.

The Curse…

Running through Limington is the Saco River. It is a popular place for teens and young adults to spend their summer floating down river, camping under the stars, and soaking in the sun. Legend has it though, there is curse along the Saco River…

Three people will drown in the Saco River every year.

How did this curse come to be? Let me tell you a story…

According to story tellers, 3 drunk sailors were heading down the Saco River in Limington near the Limington Rapids. They came across a Native American tribe where, upon which, they kidnapped the chief’s daughter. The chief’s daughter, struggling to escape, fell overboard and drowned in the fast moving rapids. The chief/father subsequently placed a curse on the Saco River stating that 3 non indigenous people will die in the river every year.

Is the curse/legend true?

To be honest, I’m not sure anyone really knows. Some locals say the curse does take, on average, 3 lives every year on the river. I honestly have never looked it up but I do know growing up we had a very healthy respect for the rapids!
